RUSSIE – Alors que la campagne électorale doit s’ouvrir officiellement ce samedi 17 février, en Russie, les agences de presse du pays ont annoncé, ce vendredi, la mort de l’opposant historique de Vladimir Poutine, Alexeï Navalny. Celui qui était considéré comme l’ennemi numéro un du Kremlin est décédé en prison, située dans l’Arctique, dans le district de Yamalo-Nenets, à l’âge de 47 ans. Son équipe n’a pas été informée de sa mort, un avocat en route vers la prison.
Il purgeait une peine de 19 ans de prison pour « extrémisme » dans une colonie pénitentiaire reculée de l’Arctique, dans des conditions très difficiles. « Le 16 février 2024, dans le centre pénitentiaire N°3, le prisonnier Navalny A.A. s’est senti mal après une promenade (…) les causes de la mort sont en train d’être établies », a indiqué le FSIN de la région arctique de Iamal dans un communiqué.
« Tous les gestes de réanimation nécessaires ont été pratiqués mais n’ont pas donné de résultat positif. Les médecins urgentistes ont constaté la mort du patient. Les causes de la mort sont en train d’être établies », a-t-il précisé, dans ce communiqué lapidaire.
Le président russe a été informé du décès, selon son porte-parole Dmitri Peskov.
Lors de diverses audiences à des procès auxquels il participait par vidéo ces derniers mois, ce grand blond au regard bleu perçant apparaissait amaigri et vieilli. Il avait enchaîné les problèmes de santé lié à une grève de la faim et à l’empoisonnement dont il avait été victime en 2020 et auquel il avait survécu miraculeusement.
La prison n’avait pas entamé sa détermination. Au cours des audiences et dans des messages diffusés sur les réseaux sociaux par l’intermédiaire de ses avocats, il ne cesse de conspuer Vladimir Poutine, qualifié de « papi caché dans un bunker », car le président russe n’apparaît que rarement en public.
Dans son procès pour « extrémisme », il a fustigé « la guerre la plus stupide et la plus insensée du XXIe siècle », évoquant l’assaut russe contre l’Ukraine.
Dans un message le 1er février diffusé par son équipe sur les réseaux sociaux, il avait appelé à des manifestations partout en Russie lors de la présidentielle prévue du 15 au 17 mars et qui doit permettre à Vladimir Poutine de se maintenir au pouvoir.
