C’est la première fois du siècle que l’on enregistre plus de cas de syphilis que de victimes du VIH en Europe. Un rapport du Centre européen de prévention et de contrôle des maladies vient de montrer au grand jour l’inquiétant come-back de cette infection bactérienne. En 2017, le continent comptait près de 33 000 cas de syphilis.
Dans le détail, on voit qu’il existe de fortes disparités selon les pays. Si de manière globale, la hausse est de 70%, certains pays ont connu une croissance vertigineuse. L’Irlande a +244% de cas en plus entre 2010 et 2017 ; tandis que le Royaume-Uni (+153%) et l’Allemagne (+144%) ont également subi de plein fouet cette renaissance de « la grande vérole ». En France, les cas de syphilis ont tout bonnement triplé en sept ans.
2/3 des victimes sont des hommes homosexuels
Sur les 260 000 cas de syphilis dénombrés en 10 ans, deux tiers sont des hommes ayant des relations homosexuelles. En France, tout comme aux Pays-Bas, en Allemagne et au Royaume-Uni, ce type de population représente même 80% des malades. Les femmes, elles, sont de moins en moins nombreuses à souffrir de la syphilis.
La principale transmission de la maladie est le rapport non-protégé. Une personne infectée ayant un rapport sans protection a 30% de chances de contaminer son partenaire sexuel. Andrew Amato-Gauci, responsable de la question au Centre européen de prévention, observe : « Cette augmentation (…) est le résultat de plusieurs facteurs tels que les relations sexuelles sans préservatif et les multiples partenaires sexuels, associées à une peur réduite ».
