Les résidents de sept régions japonaises ont été invités à fuir un tsunami venant en sens inverse après qu’une série de puissants tremblements de terre a frappé le pays d’Asie de l’Est.
Une vague de tsunami d’un mètre a déjà frappé des parties de la côte ouest le long de la mer du Japon après une série de plus de 20 tremblements de terre d’une magnitude de quatre ou plus qui ont commencé peu après 15 heures, heure locale (6 heures GMT).
« Un grand tsunami a été observé et il y a un risque de dommages graves », a déclaré l’Agence météorologique japonaise (JMA).
Un deuxième tsunami plus important est attendu et la JMA a averti que des vagues pouvant atteindre cinq mètres de haut pourraient frapper Ishikawa, l’une des régions touchées.
Des avertissements de tsunami sont en place sur toute la longueur de la côte nord du Japon, s’étendant sur environ 1 650 miles de Wakkanai, à l’extrême nord d’Hokkaido, à Kyushu, au sud.
Des avertissements ont également été émis dans l’île de Sakhaline, dans l’extrémité orientale de la Russie, et dans la ville de Vladivostok, ainsi que dans la province de Gangwon en Corée du Sud. On ne s’attend pas à ce que les vagues de tsunami soient suffisamment grandes pour mettre en danger la vie.
Les personnes vivant dans les zones côtières de sept préfectures japonaises ont reçu l’instruction d’évacuer vers un terrain plus élevé ou de se réfugier à des étages plus élevés de bâtiments robustes.
Fumio Kishida, Premier ministre du Japon, a exhorté les autorités à donner la priorité à la « vie humaine avant tout » et à « ne ménager aucun effort dans nos interventions d’urgence en cas de catastrophe ».
