La police dit que l’homme qui a disparu pour la première fois en 1998 a été détenu par un voisin de 61 ans à quelques minutes de chez lui.
Un homme algérien disparu en 1998 pendant la guerre civile du pays a été retrouvé vivant dans la cave de son voisin 26 ans plus tard, selon les autorités.
Le ministère de la Justice du pays a déclaré mardi que l’homme, identifié alternativement comme Omar bin Omran ou Omar B, a disparu à l’âge de 19 ans et a longtemps été supposé avoir été enlevé ou tué.
Mais il a été retrouvé vivant plus tôt cette semaine à l’âge de 45 ans, après avoir été retenu captif par un voisin dans une bergerie cachée par des meules de foin à seulement 200 mètres de son ancienne maison à Djelfa, dans le nord de l’Algérie.

Le ministère a déclaré qu’une enquête sur le crime « odieux » était en cours et que la victime recevait des soins médicaux et psychologiques.
La police a arrêté le ravisseur présumé, un portier de 61 ans, après qu’il ait tenté de fuir. L’enlèvement a été découvert après que le frère du suspect a publié des informations révélatrices sur les médias sociaux, au milieu d’un litige d’héritage présumé entre les frères et sœurs.
« Le 12 mai à 20 heures, heure locale, [ils] ont trouvé la victime Omar bin Omran, âgé de 45 ans, dans la cave de son voisin, BA, âgé de 61 ans », a déclaré un responsable du tribunal.
La mère de la victime est décédée en 2013, alors que la famille croyait encore qu’il était probablement mort. Les médias algériens ont rapporté que bin Omran avait dit à ses sauveteurs qu’il pouvait parfois voir sa famille de loin, mais qu’il se sentait incapable d’appeler à cause d’un « sort » que son ravisseur lui a jeté.
La découverte de Bin Omran dimanche résout un mystère qui persistait dans sa communauté depuis la sanglante guerre civile algérienne. Les parents des victimes de guerre cherchent toujours justice pour leurs proches disparus et décédés.
Environ 200 000 personnes ont été tuées dans les années 1990 pendant la guerre, qui a opposé le gouvernement aux combattants islamistes. Cette période est parfois appelée la « Décennie noire » de l’Algérie.
Jusqu’à 20 000 personnes auraient été enlevées au cours de la guerre, qui a pris fin en 2002. Selon SOS Disparus, une association algérienne pour ceux qui ont disparu de force pendant la guerre, environ 8 000 Algériens ont disparu entre 1992 et 1998 seulement.
