Selon les Archives nationales, ce sont désormais 97% des environ cinq millions de pages du dossier qui sont accessibles.
Le président démocrate Joe Biden a indiqué dans une note qu’un nombre « limité » de documents ne pourraient pas être rendus publics, une mesure « nécessaire » afin de « prévenir des dommages sur la défense militaire, les opérations de renseignement, les forces de l’ordre ou la politique étrangère ».
L’assassinat du très populaire président américain, le 22 novembre 1963 à Dallas, au Texas, a donné lieu à de nombreuses théories complotistes, alimentées par des centaines de livres et de films comme celui d’Oliver Stone « JFK » (1991).
Elles rejettent les conclusions de la commission d’enquête dite « commission Warren » qui avait déterminé en 1964 que Lee Harvey Oswald, un ancien Marine ayant vécu en Union soviétique, avait agi seul dans l’assassinat du président Kennedy. Il avait été tué deux jours après.
Certains pensent qu’Oswald a été utilisé par Cuba ou l’URSS. D’autres estiment que l’assassinat a été commandité par l’opposition anticastriste cubaine avec le soutien des services secrets américains et du FBI, ou par des opposants à JFK aux Etats-Unis.
En 2017, Donald Trump avait rendu publics des dossiers dans cette affaire, conformément à une loi du Congrès de 1992 exigeant que tous les documents liés au président Kennedy soient publiés dans les 25 ans.
