La Chine a frappé fort dans sa lutte contre la corruption. Li Jianping, ancien fonctionnaire de Mongolie intérieure, a été exécuté après avoir été reconnu coupable d’un gigantesque scandale de corruption impliquant 412 millions de dollars.

Li, accusé de pots-de-vin massifs, de détournement de fonds publics et de liens avec le crime organisé, avait vu son appel rejeté en août 2023. Malgré ses derniers instants passés avec sa famille, il a dû faire face à la justice chinoise, qui a confirmé sa condamnation à mort.

Un signal fort dans une campagne impitoyable

La peine de mort pour corruption reste rare en Chine, où la réclusion à perpétuité est généralement appliquée. Toutefois, sous l’ère Xi Jinping, la campagne anti-corruption ne laisse aucune place à la clémence, même pour les hauts responsables. Depuis son lancement en 2012, cette croisade a entraîné la chute de milliers de cadres politiques, d’hommes d’affaires et de militaires de haut rang.

Le message est clair : ceux qui abusent de leur pouvoir pour s’enrichir aux dépens de l’État pourraient payer le prix ultime. Cette politique vise non seulement à rétablir la confiance dans le gouvernement, mais également à consolider l’autorité de Xi Jinping en éliminant les réseaux de corruption qui pourraient menacer son pouvoir.

Une décision controversée

Si cette exécution marque un tournant, elle soulève également des questions sur l’approche de la Chine envers la peine de mort et les droits de l’homme. Les critiques internationales, bien que rares dans ce cas spécifique, remettent en cause l’efficacité de telles mesures extrêmes pour enrayer un fléau profondément enraciné dans le système.
