La Corée du Nord a confirmé jeudi sa toute première épidémie de Covid-19, les médias d’État l’indiquant comme un « grave incident d’urgence national », plus de deux ans après que la pandémie ait ravagé le monde entier.
L’agence de presse officielle KCNA a rapporté que les échantillons prélevés sur des patients atteints de fièvre à Pyongyang dimanche étaient « cohérents » avec la variante hautement transmissible Omicron BA.2 du virus.
La Corée du Nord a confirmé samedi plus de 296 000 nouveaux patients souffrant de fièvre et de plus de 15 morts, ce qui porte le nombre total de patients à 820 000.
« Le gouvernement examine activement pour proposer officiellement à la Corée du Nord de tenir une réunion au niveau opérationnel au début de la semaine », a déclaré Yonhap, a cité un haut responsable sud-coréen. Il a révélé que la proposition serait officiellement présentée après que Séoul aura mené des consultations avec les ministres concernés.
L’agence de presse a rapporté que le président sud-coréen nouvellement élu Yoon Suk-yeol avait offert de fournir à ses voisins du nord des vaccins et du matériel médical contre le Covid-19, marquant ainsi un nouveau niveau de coopération entre les deux pays.
Le dirigeant nord-coréen Kim Jong Un a ordonné la mise en œuvre d’un « système anti-épidémie de premier ordre » d’urgence, imposant un confinement dans toutes les villes et tous les comtés afin de freiner la propagation du virus et d’éradiquer la source de l’infection dans les plus brefs délais.
Kim a présidé jeudi une réunion avec de hauts responsables gouvernementaux pour discuter des mesures de riposte après que Pyongyang eut enregistré son premier cas d’Omicron le 8 mai. Il a ensuite ordonné un confinement strict à l’échelle nationale et la mobilisation du système de prévention des épidémies.
La Corée du Nord est à l’origine d’un blocus rigide auto-imposé du coronavirus depuis le début de 2020 lorsque le virus est apparu pour se protéger de la pandémie.
Pyongyang n’avait confirmé un seul cas de coronavirus que jeudi après que l’Organisation mondiale de la santé ait rapporté qu’à la fin de 2020, la Corée du Nord avait effectué 13 259 tests de dépistage du Covid-19, qui sont tous revenus négatifs.
La Corée du Nord a annoncé vendredi ses premiers décès dus au Covid-19 au milieu d’une épidémie de fièvre « explosive » dans le pays.
Six personnes sont mortes à ce jour, les experts affirmant la conviction qu’aucune – ou très peu – des 26 millions de personnes du pays n’a été vaccinée.
