Le soldat aurait « décidé de venir en République Démocratique de Corée, en raison des mauvais traitements et de la discrimination raciale » au sein de l’armée des États-Unis. Une traverse illégale motivée par sa « désillusion de la société américaine inégalitaire » et avec l’intention de trouver refuge en Corée du Nord ou dans un pays tiers selon Pyongyang.

Travis King a eu de nombreux problèmes judiciaires lors de son déploiement en Corée du Sud. Le soldat de 23 ans était accusé d’agression et avait reconnu avoir endommagé une voiture de police. Après deux mois de détention, il était à l’aéroport en route vers les États-Unis pour faire face à d’autres mesures disciplinaires, lorsqu’il a opéré un demi-tour.

Travis King s’est alors rendu à une visite organisée de la zone de sécurité conjointe entre les deux Corées avant de passer au Nord. Son avenir semble très incertain alors que les autorités américaines assurent continuer de tout faire pour le ramener aux États-Unis.
