La carrière de boxe fulgurante de Francis Ngannou se poursuit avec une confrontation contre l’ancien champion des poids lourds Anthony Joshua en Arabie saoudite, selon un nouveau rapport.
Le journaliste vétéran du MMA Ariel Helwani a annoncé le combat vendredi, citant le conseiller royal saoudien Turki AlAlShikh. Une conférence de presse est prévue le 15 janvier pour annoncer la date du combat, mais Helwani a déclaré qu’AlAlShikh a confirmé que les deux parties avaient signé un accord pour rendre officiel un combat des poids lourds de 10 tours pour plus tard cette année à Riyad. Selon ESPN.com, le combat devrait avoir lieu le 8 mars, la date initialement prévue pour accueillir Joshua contre Deontay Wilder.
La réservation intervient trois jours après que le co-promoteur de Joshua, Eddie Hearn de Matchroom Boxing, a déclaré que des discussions étaient en cours pour un combat « absolument colossal » entre Joshua et Ngannou ; le match était l’une des trois possibilités qui incluait Joshua face au vainqueur d’un prochain unificateur de titre entre les champions Tyson Fury et Oleksandr Usyk.
Joshua, l’ancien champion de la WBA, de la WBO, de l’IBF et de l’IBO, a poursuivi sa tournée de retour le mois dernier, surpassant Otto Walin en tant que co-headliner face à Deontay Wilder sur la carte Day of Reckoning en Arabie saoudite. La victoire a fait monter la série actuelle de Joshua à trois après deux revers contre Usyk. Les attentes étaient élevées pour Wilder d’affrerer Joshua s’il était victorieux, mais l’ex-champion a été bouleversé par Joseph Parker.
Pour l’ancien champion des poids lourds de l’UFC Ngannou, la réservation est un autre gros coup qui survient trois mois après un presque-bouleversement de Fury dans ses débuts de boxe professionnelle. Radié avant le combat, Ngannou a choqué le monde de la boxe en poussant Fury à sa limite, frappant même le champion à un moment donné avant de perdre par décision fractionnée.
