Des scientifiques de l’Institut de médecine tropicale d’Anvers, en Belgique, ont découvert que l’utilisation quotidienne de certains bains de bouche pourrait augmenter le risque de développer des cancers de l’œsophage et colorectal. Selon leur étude, deux espèces de bactéries potentiellement cancérigènes étaient plus répandues après trois mois d’utilisation quotidienne d’un bain de bouche.

Le professeur Chris Kenyon, membre de l’équipe de recherche, a déclaré : « La plupart des gens ne devraient pas utiliser de bain de bouche quotidiennement, et s’ils le font, ils devraient choisir des préparations sans alcool et limiter leur utilisation à quelques jours. »

La marque de bain de bouche Listerine, utilisée dans cette étude, a réagi aux conclusions des chercheurs. Dans leur réponse, ils ont indiqué : « Sur la base de notre examen initial, l’essai publié manque de plusieurs contrôles de conception importants et d’une rigueur adéquate pour tirer des conclusions sur l’impact potentiel sur la santé humaine. »
