Response from the ministry of haitians Living abroad to discriminatory remarks targeting the Haitian diaspora in the United States.-

2 min de lecture

Port-au-Prince, September 10, 2024 – The Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) expressed its outrage following discriminatory remarks made by American political figures targeting our compatriots in the diaspora, particularly those residing in Springfield, Ohio.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Haitians living abroad have been victims of disinformation campaigns, stigmatization, and dehumanization for political gain. The MHAVE reminds us that, in these moments of crisis, it is crucial for all Haitians to stand together in defense of their dignity and humanity.

In this context, Ms. Dominique Dupuy, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad, organized a virtual meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, bringing together over fifty community and religious leaders, as well as representatives from organizations operating in Ohio and across the United States. Also present at the meeting was Dr. Nikita Séjour, Advisor to Prime Minister Dr. Garry Conille. The primary objective of this discussion was to show solidarity with the affected community members and to devise appropriate responses to these attacks.

During the meeting, the Minister emphasized MHAVE’s firm stance: « We not only wish to express our solidarity, but also to send a clear signal of rejection. We strongly denounce these remarks that undermine the dignity of our compatriots and could jeopardize their safety. »

In collaboration with diaspora organizations, MHAVE is currently exploring strategies to provide increased protection to Haitians who are victims of intimidation or stigmatization in Springfield and elsewhere. The ministry also encourages all legal initiatives undertaken by associations defending the rights of Haitian migrants to protect our compatriots.

Furthermore, through its diplomatic and consular missions, MHAVE is committed to establishing a support and assistance system for Haitians in the diaspora, wherever they may be.
