📍L’étymologie de "Kongo" signifie "allié de léopard", expression tirée de "Ko-ngo".
Il en découle même le mythe du chef léopard, le protecteur du royaume selon lequel en cas de graves dangers, les populations accouraient vers lui pour trouver refuge. Central dans l’Histoire du pays comme dans la vie des congolais, le léopard représente pour beaucoup bien plus qu’un simple emblème et qu’un symbole national.

La coiffe à peau de la panthera pardus (léopard) a toujours été dans la société bantoue l’un des symboles matériels les plus importants et les plus solennels du pouvoir traditionnel légué par les ancêtres défunts.
