C’est avec un profond sens de l’histoire et de la solidarité que Haïti accueille aujourd’hui le Président colombien Gustavo Petro. Haïti, première République noire indépendante depuis 1804, n’a pas seulement brisé les chaînes de l’esclavage sur son propre sol. Notre engagement envers la liberté n’a jamais connu de frontières, et cet héritage s’illustre de manière éclatante à travers notre soutien décisif aux luttes d’émancipation en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes.
En 1815, Simón Bolívar, battu sur les champs de bataille et en quête de soutien, trouva refuge en Haïti. Le Président Alexandre Pétion, fidèle à nos idéaux de justice et de solidarité, lui offrit bien plus qu’un abri : des armes, des munitions, des troupes et une promesse. Bolívar repartit d’Haïti avec un engagement solennel, celui de libérer les peuples d’Amérique latine et d’abolir l’esclavage dans les territoires qu’il délivrerait. Ce pacte, bien que souvent ignoré dans les récits historiques, fut le fondement des victoires qui libérèrent la Colombie, le Venezuela, l’Équateur, le Pérou et la Bolivie.
Cependant, notre contribution ne s’arrête pas là. En 1822, Haïti joua un rôle déterminant dans la libération de la partie orientale de l’île – aujourd’hui la République Dominicaine – de la domination espagnole. Cette intervention permit à nos frères et sœurs de l’Est de goûter à leur première expérience d’indépendance. Bien que nos chemins aient depuis évolué différemment, cette page de l’histoire témoigne de la vision de Pétion et de notre engagement à lutter contre toutes les formes d’oppression dans la région.
