Le défilé de l’unité haïtienne – suspendu au cours des deux dernières années – quittera la place Mattapan ce dimanche (15 mai) à 13 h et remontera l’avenue Blue Hill jusqu’au parc Harambee où des événements culturels auront lieu de 15 h 30 à 17 h.
Le défilé met en lumière la culture haïtienne avec des églises, des organisations, des entreprises et des écoles représentées. Il comprendra également des élus de la ville et de l’État, y compris la première conseillère municipale haïtiano-américaine de Boston, Ruthzee Louijeune.
Tant de choses se sont passées au cours des deux dernières années dans la communauté haïtienne, et au-delà en Haïti, depuis le dernier défilé en 2019. Il y a eu de grands bouleversements politiques en Haïti, une autre catastrophe naturelle et une crise des réfugiés, mais il y a eu aussi la célébration et la restauration de nombreuses entreprises appartenant à des Haïti qui ont été touchées par la pandémie.
Wilner Auguste, de Haitian American United (HAU) – qui organise l’événement, a déclaré que dimanche sera un retour à la mise en valeur et à la célébration du drapeau haïtien.
« Je me souviens que lorsque nous avons eu le premier défilé en 2001, nous avons essayé de ne pas nous comparer à d’autres groupes ethniques qui ont des célébrations », a-t-il déclaré. « Ce n’était pas la première fois que nous célébrions le Jour du drapeau dans le Massachusetts, mais c’était le premier défilé. Maintenant, nous en sommes à la 20e année et c’est une bonne chose… Au cours des années précédentes, nous l’avons même tenu sous une pluie battante. C’est vraiment une bonne chose pour nous tous et HAU a travaillé très dur pour que cela se produise. »
Le Jour du drapeau est une fête importante dans la culture haïtienne, juste après le 1er janvier. 1— Jour de l’indépendance. Il marque les événements qui ont eu lieu en mai 1803, lorsque des factions de révolutionnaires noirs haïtiens ont accepté de se rencontrer et de régler les différences internes. Ils ont ensuite monté ensemble une force plus importante pour combattre et vaincre les colonisateurs français.
« Ils ont mis de côté tout ce qui les divisait et ont décidé de se battre pour l’indépendance d’Haïti », a déclaré Auguste.
Pour Louijeune, le retour du défilé sera un moment spécial de sa jeune carrière politique. Elle y a assisté dans le passé, mais généralement des coulisses à traîner une caméra de télévision pour son père, Robert, qui a une émission populaire sur le thème haïtien sur Boston Neighborhood Network (BNN-TV).
« Être également sur l’avenue Blue Hill est si important pour la communauté noire et constitue un corridor pour la communauté haïtiano-américaine. Beaucoup de nos entreprises, églises et organisations se trouvent sur l’avenue Blue Hill et il est donc important d’y avoir ce moment », a-t-elle déclaré.
Louijeune se considère comme la dernière d’un continuum d’Américains haïtiens de premier plan comme l’ancien sénateur de l’État. Linda Dorcena Forry et la représentante de l’État Marie St. Fleur, qui, avec d’autres « pionniers », a inspiré de jeunes leaders comme Louijeune, qui fait partie d’une jeune génération adulte qui est principalement née à Boston ou qui est venue ici à un très jeune âge.
« Je fais partie d’une nouvelle génération », a-t-elle déclaré. « Il y a parfois une déconnexion générationnelle sur la façon dont les choses se font ici et dans la culture haïtienne. Je suis excité parce que je pense que je peux aider à combler ce fossé et cela sera exposé. »
Ashley Louis, 34 ans, qui exploite le Forever Young Adult Day Health Center à Hyde Park, sera la grande maréchale du défilé. Louis, qui est marié et père de cinq enfants, est né à Boston et a fréquenté la Boston Latin Academy. Elle a obtenu un diplôme en comptabilité et en finance de l’université de Syracuse et, plus tard, des diplômes supérieurs.
« Il va être bon pour mes enfants de me voir dans le défilé et de savoir que nous ne sommes pas seulement d’Amérique, mais que nous avons aussi une culture distincte et que c’est important pour moi et qu’elle devrait être mise en œuvre dans nos vies », a déclaré Louis.
Transmettre les traditions et la culture à ceux qui ne sont pas nés en Haïti est un élément clé du maintien du défilé de l’unité, mais une autre pièce critique rappelle de merveilleux souvenirs à la population croissante de personnes âgées haïtiennes.
La présence des personnes âgées au défilé de l’unité est toujours importante, et les organisateurs du défilé ont déclaré qu’il y avait une raison à cela. « Ils ne peuvent pas marcher dans le défilé, mais ils peuvent le voir et participer d’autres façons », a déclaré Auguste.
« C’est quelque chose qu’ils avaient l’habitude d’avoir ; ils avaient un grand défilé à Port-au-Prince. Lorsque nous faisons ce défilé sur l’avenue Blue Hill, cela a pour but d’encourager nos personnes âgées. Ils pensent à Haïti et à l’époque où ils étaient en Haïti il y a longtemps et à la façon dont ils se sont amusés quand ils étaient à l’école ou qu’ils étaient étudiants le jour du drapeau. C’est l’une des raisons du défilé, et ils l’apprécient tellement. »
