Dikembe Mutombo, l’une des plus grandes légendes de la NBA, est décédé ce lundi à l’âge de 58 ans après une bataille contre un cancer du cerveau. Connu pour ses compétences défensives exceptionnelles et son geste emblématique du doigt pour signifier un tir bloqué, Mutombo a marqué l’histoire du basketball.
Au cours de sa carrière, il a été sélectionné à huit reprises pour le All-Star Game et a remporté quatre fois le titre de joueur défensif de l’année. À sa retraite, il occupait la deuxième place sur la liste des tirs bloqués de tous les temps de la NBA, un exploit qui témoigne de sa domination sur le terrain.
Originaire de la République démocratique du Congo, Mutombo a d’abord brillé à l’Université de Georgetown avant d’être repêché par les Denver Nuggets en 1991. Sa carrière s’est étendue sur 18 saisons, durant lesquelles il a évolué dans plusieurs équipes emblématiques, dont les Atlanta Hawks et les Houston Rockets.
En dehors du sport, Mutombo était également connu pour son engagement humanitaire. Il a fondé la Fondation Dikembe Mutombo en 1997, avec pour mission d’améliorer les conditions de vie dans son pays natal, la RDC. Ses actions caritatives, notamment la construction d’un hôpital à Kinshasa, ont fait de lui une figure respectée bien au-delà du monde du basketball.
Le commissaire de la NBA, Adam Silver, a rendu hommage à Mutombo, le qualifiant de « géant à la fois sur et en dehors du terrain », tout en saluant ses contributions en tant qu’ambassadeur mondial du sport et son dévouement à améliorer la vie des autres.
