La théobromine est présente principalement dans le chocolat noir, un peu moins dans le chocolat au lait et est absente dans le chocolat blanc.

Les races les plus touchées sont celles que l’on appelle les races « brachychéphales », ce sont toutes celles dont le museau est plat comme le Bulldog Anglais, le Carlin, le Pékinois, le Shi-tzu, le Boxer, le Bullmastiff, le Saint Bernard, ces races sont encore plus fragiles de par leur problèmes respiratoires et cardiaques.
Quelle quantité est mortelle?
La dose mortelle de la théobromine chez le chien se situe entre 250 et 500 mg par kg de poids corporel et dépend donc de la masse corporelle du chien. (à savoir qu’1 gramme de chocolat noir contient 13,7 mg de théobromine)
200 grammes de chocolat noir peuvent donc bel et bien causer la mort d’un chien de taille moyenne et 100 grammes, la mort d’un chien de petite taille. Le chocolat au lait est un peu moins nocif puisqu’il contient environ 1,5 mg de théobromine par gramme de chocolat, mais est également mortel si le chien de taille moyenne en ingère entre 1 et 2 kilos.
Quels sont les symptômes après l’ingestion de chocolat?
Le chien qui a ingéré du chocolat présentera des signes de soif excessive, de diarrhée, des signes d’agitation, des spasmes et des convulsions.
Que faire si pendant mon absence, mon chien a mangé du chocolat?
Il est impératif d’agir le plus tôt possible et avant tout symptômes car ceux-ci n’apparaissent que 8 heures après l’ingestion et le temps qu’on s’en rende compte, il est déjà souvent trop tard car la mort peut survenir 12 à 24 heures après l’ingestion.
Appelez votre vétérinaire immédiatement, si celui-ci est absent, contactez le vétérinaire de garde. (Vous aurez le numéro du vétérinaire de garde sur la messagerie de votre vétérinaire habituel). Il faudra essayer de faire vomir le chien, si ça ne marche pas votre vétérinaire vous donnera un traitement qui tentera de limiter l’absorption de théobromine dans l’organisme de votre chien. Malheureusement, aucun antidote n’existe à l’heure actuelle contre l’intoxication au chocolat.
