Studio City, Californie — L’ancien champion de boxe mexicain Julio César Chávez Jr. a été arrêté le 2 juillet 2025 par les agents de l’Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) en Californie. Il est accusé de liens avec le cartel de Sinaloa, de fraude migratoire, de trafic d’armes et de munitions. Cette arrestation spectaculaire intervient quelques jours seulement après son combat très médiatisé contre Jake Paul.
Chávez Jr., fils de la légende de la boxe Julio César Chávez Sr., était entré légalement aux États-Unis en août 2023 avec un visa de tourisme. Son visa a expiré en février 2024, mais il est resté sur le territoire américain, déposant en avril une demande de carte verte basée sur son mariage avec une citoyenne américaine.
Cependant, selon le Département de la Sécurité intérieure (DHS), sa demande comportait de fausses déclarations et a été jugée frauduleuse. Le DHS l’a dès lors désigné comme expulsable depuis juin 2025.
Les autorités américaines affirment que Julio César Chávez Jr. est lié à des membres actifs du cartel de Sinaloa, l’une des organisations criminelles les plus puissantes du Mexique, qualifiée de groupe terroriste étranger par l’administration Trump. Un mandat d’arrêt international émis par le Mexique en janvier 2023 vise Chávez Jr. pour des activités liées à la criminalité organisée, notamment le trafic d’armes, de munitions et d’explosifs.
Selon un communiqué du DHS, Chávez aurait utilisé ses fréquents voyages entre le Mexique et les États-Unis pour appuyer des activités de contrebande liées au cartel.
« Personne n’est au-dessus des lois, même les athlètes de renommée mondiale », a déclaré un responsable de l’administration Trump.
« L’époque de la violence incontrôlée des cartels est révolue. »
L’affaire a rapidement pris une tournure politique. L’administration Biden avait identifié Chávez Jr. comme une menace pour la sécurité publique, mais ne l’avait pas placé en priorité pour l’expulsion. Ce laxisme perçu a été vivement critiqué par les autorités actuelles sous l’administration Trump, qui ont relancé la procédure et ordonné son arrestation.
Des figures conservatrices y voient une démonstration de la « tolérance excessive » de l’ancienne politique migratoire, tandis que les avocats de Chávez dénoncent une « affaire montée de toutes pièces à des fins politiques ».
L’avocat de Chávez Jr., Michael Goldstein, affirme que son client est victime d’une persécution politique orchestrée et nie toute implication criminelle. Il rappelle que toutes les activités de Chávez Jr., y compris ses entraînements, sont « publics, documentés, et incompatibles avec une vie criminelle clandestine ».
« C’est une stratégie visant à faire de lui un exemple médiatique. Il n’a rien à voir avec un cartel », déclare Me Goldstein.
