Avant la création du bicolore haïtien, les insurgés utilisaient comme emblème le drapeau français au cours de leurs combats. Au fait, Toussaint Louverture, considéré comme le précurseur de l’indépendance haïtienne, a adopté comme emblème ledit drapeau en 1798.

Le premier drapeau haïtien a donc été organisé en deux bandes d’étoffes, bleue et rouge, disposées verticalement. Jean-Jacques Dessalines y fit inscrire la devise « liberté ou la mort ». Avec ce drapeau, une étape en plus a donc été franchie dans la lutte pour l’indépendance d’Haïti.

Mais au final, c’est le bicolore bleu et rouge qui a fini par triompher. Mais rien n’enlève qu’il symbolise l’union des noirs et des mulâtres. D’ailleurs, dans les armoiries figurent les armes de la liberté et la légende « l’union fait la force ».

C’était donc à Catherine Flon qu’il incombait de coudre le premier drapeau haïtien à Arcahaie. Les Haïtiens continuent encore aujourd’hui de la vénérer comme la mère du drapeau.
